Crushing It takes Cyrano de Bergerac to the center grade set. Levy cleverly retells the tale, and information technology'southward pretty dang beautiful.
In case you tin can't tell from this here blog, I read a lot. One result of that is that I've read a whole lot of variations of Cyrano, and then for me this wasn't the most original tale, and it'southward not my favorite ship set either. That said, I'1000 impressed with what Levy did with information technology.

In case you tin can't tell from this here blog, I read a lot. Ane effect of that is that I've read a whole lot of variations of Cyrano, so for me this wasn't the most original tale, and it'due south not my favorite ship ready either. That said, I'g impressed with what Levy did with it.
The tale really lends itself much better to the eye school age than to adults imo. Setting the person y'all're into up with someone you know isn't correct for them, manipulating them into making that choice, is non a wise decision. But information technology'south and so much more understandable of a mistake when your hormones are but starting to be similar "oh hey, boys are cute, and also omg your best friend Tyler'southward SUPER Beautiful in case you haven't noticed" and you're kind of freaking out almost all of information technology. Also, Kat's cocky-esteem'due south way low because hello Heart School, aka destroyer of all self-esteem. Kat agrees to help set Tyler upward with her pretty, popular best cousin Olivia, immediately regrets information technology, merely really can't see a way out.
1 thing I practise really dear about Crushing It, aside from how well information technology works with this age group, is Tyler. It's and so cute how he knows what he wants, and he isn't but into popularity and prettiness. He's pretty forward-thinking, looking for personality and common interests. That boy volition arrive. I would totally accept loved this volume every bit a kid, because it shows that the nerdy girl can become the guy.
In addition to that, I likewise really appreciate the subtle hints that Olivia and Kat may have some things to work through in the future. Their human relationship'due south a bit toxic; Kat is starting to meet that, and, while they're not at that place yet, things will demand to change or their relationship will end. Information technology's nice that Kat takes a moment to realize how much she tries to care almost what Olivia'southward into and how dismissive Olivia is of what Kat'south into. Without being most that, I remember that'due south a nice petty element for younger readers who might struggle with similarly unbalanced friendships (I know I did).
Center grade romance is so cute, and I'g glad there are a few middle grades with a strong focus on romance and crushes, because lbr that's basically all middle and loftier school for near of us.

Kat has a cousin and all-time friend, Olivia, who has gotten alpine and pretty in middle school. In comparison, Kat feels like a "warthog" with her spectacles and braces, then when Olivia decides she "like likes" Kat'due south long time friend and neighbor, Tyler, Kat agrees to help fix the two up. This is difficult, since Olivia doesn't care about whatsoever of Tyler's interests (books, video games)-- she simply thinks he's cute. Kat tries to tell Olivia all of Tyler'southward favorites, throws the two together whenever she can, and eventually makes some progress. When the two hang out, though, Kate has to hover in the wings and give Olivia input every bit to what to say. In the end, this blows up in her face and Tyler becomes angry at her. Is he just angry well-nigh Olivia, or is he angry because he secretly feels the same way well-nigh Kat as she feels nigh him.
Strengths: This really channeled all the all-time of Ellen Conford and Paula Danziger's tween novels of the 1970s simply updated it and put some squeamish modern twists on eye school romance. The essential message is that y'all should be yourself and observe friends to hang out with that share your interests, and that you shouldn't have to change. I loved that the large takeaway was that Tyler was offended that Kat would think Olivia's looks and popularity mattered to him.
Weaknesses: Vaguely bothered by Kat calling herself a warthog and by Olivia feeling she needed to change to attract Tyler. Nevertheless, it is absolutely truthful to life-- I'm bothered more than that at that place are real students that feel this way. Writing a book that didn't show this wouldn't be realistic.
What I really recollect: Information technology's hard to get a perfect balance on message versus entertainment, but this is a actually cracking try. The 7th grade me would have saved upwards my babysitting coin in lodge to buy a re-create of this for myself!
Adult rating: iii stars
Cute book about first romance. Kat and her cousin, Olivia, are best friends despite having piddling in mutual. Olivia is tall, cute, graceful and pop. Kat is obviously (so she thinks), nerdy, artistic, and smart. Tyler has been Kat's best friend forever. Over the summer he turned skillful-looking and Kat is suddenly seeing her longtime friend in a unlike way. Olivia notices too and would like nothing more to attend the autumn trip the light fantastic toe with Tyler. Like Ka

Cute book well-nigh first romance. Kat and her cousin, Olivia, are best friends despite having footling in common. Olivia is alpine, beautiful, graceful and pop. Kat is manifestly (so she thinks), nerdy, artistic, and smart. Tyler has been Kat'southward best friend forever. Over the summer he turned adept-looking and Kat is suddenly seeing her longtime friend in a different way. Olivia notices too and would like nothing more than than to nourish the fall trip the light fantastic with Tyler. Like Kat, Olivia and Tyler have nix in mutual. No matter what Olivia does, she can't seem to attract Tyler's attention. Since Kat knows him so well, she seeks her help to brand information technology happen. Kat makes cheat sheets almost Tyler's interests, pretends to be Olivia online, and feeds her lines through the phone. Information technology works. Tyler thinks Olivia is a perfect friction match and asks her to the trip the light fantastic toe.
You lot tin can predict what's going to happen. They can't maintain the charade. The poop hits the fan. Anybody must come make clean with the truth. I peculiarly liked Tyler's reaction. He's upset at starting time, but then he spills the beans nearly liking Kat all along. As a seventh grader, he already realizes that shared interests is way more than important that looks when choosing a girlfriend.

Not many people can look past the looks(non even me). Kat is lucky to know someone who cares almost the mind of people than the appearences as Tyler is.
And the process of Kat helping Olivia with her crush showed that she was brave enough to concur back her feelings for someone she really cared about. The trouble of many The stop of the book moved me the most, that Tyler didn't care how she looked. What really matters to him was their common interests and how they could understand each others choices.

So much fun to read!!!! My mom read it to me and she put a lot of feeling in information technology. I really recommend it for you!
My review:
After a few chapters, my girl asks, "Mommy, what is a boy ring?" I am more happy to explicate and give some examples. Also, I get to encounter what is passing through her head in those moments. It's fascinating.
You see friendships on the folio, yous read what a crush feels like on the page, IMO it gives kiddos words and ideas to describe what they might exist

First of all, I guess I'm kind of embarrassed to have read this book, merely I did actually like it a fiddling.

Anyways, my simply critique would be that the storyline isn't really that interesting to the point where you need a moment to "assimilate" what yous just read or to motility on after reading the whole book. Information technology'due south adept ngl. Kat has a pick me girl's mind simply didn't nosotros all at some bespeak lol. Hey, at to the lowest degree she follows the daughter code and tin play video games, gotta salute to thatš¤Besides, the ending makes me want a fellow but at the same time I really don't find any dude to my likingšš¤

Joanne Levy'southward honey of books began at a very early on historic period.
